Pigs
Pigs have four toes on each hoof. Pigs walk on only two of their toes on each foot. They look like they are walking on tiptoe. Pork comes from pigs. Many people love to eat pork. We use a pig’s bones & skin to make glue, gloves, shoes and footballs. Pig hair is used for artist’s brushes. And their dried bones are used for buttons and bone china. A pigs scream of a jet engine taking off measures 113 decibels. The scream of a frightened pig can measure 115 decibels. There are pigs on every continent except for Antarctica. The largest pig was a Poland-China hog named “Big Bill.” He weighed a portly 2,552 lbs and was so large that he dragged his belly on the ground. He had a shoulder height of 5 feet and a length of 9 feet. Pigs are very intelligent and learn very quickly. They are the fourth smartest animals. Pigs are intelligent and have been placed fourth on the intelligence list (humans are first, primates are second, dolphins/whales are third and pigs are fourth). A mother pig can give birth to 8 – 12 piglets in one litter, and she can have 2 litters in one year. One mother pig gave birth to 37 piglets at the same time! Pigs live for 9 to 15 years.
